The LFC Postcard series is a self initiated project, that aims to capture the ups and downs felt by fans throughout the football league season. After every Liverpool FC league match, a postcard is designed that sums up the game in a visual way. Each postcard is available for sale over at davewill.bigcartel.com
Liverpool v Arsenal - 25 Years Poster
On the 26th May 1989, Arsenal FC scored a last minute goal that snatched the league title away from Liverpool in the most dramatic of circumstances. 25 years later, Liverpool once again hosted Arsenal at Anfield and with the game being broadcast live on BT Sport, I was approached to create a poster that symbolised the great history between the 2 clubs, starting from the 1989 game and taking the viewer through to the live game on BT Sport.
The poster was based on the familiar dressing room scene, showing a range of shirts hanging up. The top left shirt showed the kit worn in 1989, followed by the kit worn in 1990 and so on, up until the kit that would be worn in 2014 as the 2 clubs met. This idea then worked in reverse from the centre outwards, so the 2 shirts shown in the centre of the page were the 2 that would be worn in the live BT Sport clash.
Once the project was completed, BT Sport offered the poster as a free download to fans who could reminisce about past kits before the big game (which Liverpool went on to win 5-1!)
World Cup Groups Poster
On the 6th December 2013, the draw for the group stage of the 2014 World Cup was made, pairing up some of the greatest nations in World football to battle it out in Brazil. BT Sport commissioned me to create a poster with a twist. The plan was to design something that clearly displayed the 8 groups in which the 32 teams had been divided up into. The twist was that BT Sport wanted to release the poster online as free download within minutes of the draw being made. So I set about creating something that would look good yet also be easy to piece together as the live draw took place. The final design was finished the night before, with all 32 teams set out in a random order, then as the draw took place live on the internet, I quickly re-assembled each team into their correct group, before the final version was sent across to BT Sport. Within minutes of the draw finishing, the poster was online, being promoted via the @BTSportFootball twitter account making it available to thousands of football fans in an instant.
The FAWSL big kick off
Womens football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK right now and to encourage further success, BT Sport signed up the broadcast rights to the FA Womens Soccer League (FAWSL) to show live games on their sports channels for the 2014 season. I was commissioned to produce a poster that advertised the fact that games could be seen live on BT Sport for the first time in the women's games history. The brief was simple. to find a way of including all 18 teams from the WSL League's 1 & 2, and present that information in a visually interesting way, which would once again be given away for free online as a downloadable poster. The result harked back to the days of collecting football stickers at the start of a new season, but each sticker represented a club from the league, or a piece of information that helped raise awareness of the new broadcast deal.
Limited to a print run of only 91, the Messi 91 poster was a celebration of a record breaking 2012 for the world's best football player. Lionel Messi scored 91 goals in a calendar year, breaking the world record that was previously held by Gerd Muller.
Every goal scored is illustrated as a unique symbol, along with a description for the type of goal scored and who it was scored against. The poster was featured on numerous websites including The Drum, Computer Arts and The Daily Mirror.
All 91 prints sold out within a week, with buyers ranging from countries including Ecuador, India, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, France, Belgium, Spain, Holland, Finland and the USA.
